FSSAI Registration

1. Purpose

The FSSAI is a regulatory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Its primary purpose is to ensure the safety and quality of food products to protect the health of consumers.

2. Mandatory Compliance

FSSAI registration is compulsory for all food businesses operating in India, irrespective of their size or scale of operation. It is a legal requirement under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

3. Types of Registration:

• Basic Registration: For small businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs. This is suitable for businesses like small-scale manufacturers, hawkers, and petty food business operators.

• State License: For businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹12 lakhs and up to ₹20 crores. This applies to medium-sized manufacturers, transporters, and storage operators.

• Central License: For businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 crores. This applies to large manufacturers, importers, and exporters.

4. Application Process:

• Businesses need to apply for FSSAI registration or license through the online portal of the FSSAI.

• The application form varies based on the type of registration or license required.

• Applicants must submit necessary documents, including details of the food products to be handled, business premises details, and the Food Safety Management System plan.

5. Validity and Renewal

The FSSAI registration or license is valid for a specified period, typically ranging from 1 to 5 years. Businesses are required to renew their registration or license before the expiry to ensure continued compliance.

6. Compliance and Inspections

FSSAI conducts inspections and audits to ensure that food businesses adhere to the prescribed standards and regulations. Non-compliance can lead to penalties and legal consequences.

7. Display of FSSAI Logo

Food businesses must display the FSSAI license or registration number on their food products. This helps consumers identify products that meet the food safety and quality standards set by the FSSAI.

8. Food Safety and Quality Standards

FSSAI sets standards for various aspects of food, including permissible additives, contaminants, labeling requirements, and hygiene standards in food establishments.

In summary, FSSAI registration is a crucial step for any business involved in the food industry in India. It not only ensures compliance with legal requirements but also contributes to the overall goal of providing safe and quality food to consumers.

3 Types of food license

1.Basic License

A business with a turnover below 12 lakh would need to acquire FSSAI basic license. Further, as the turnover of the business increases above 12 lakhs, the basic registration needs to upgrade to the state license. Thus, as the name implies, it is an intermediate-level license that is generally opted by small businesses or startups.

2.State License

The business with a turnover above 12 lakhs to 20 crores needs to obtain a State license. The FSSAI State license is also acquired by small to medium businesses, retailers, restaurant marketers, storage units, distributors, etc.

3.Central license

FSSAI Central license is required by the business with a turnover of above 20 crores. Along with this, importers, manufacturers, operators in the Central government, airports, seaports, railways, etc need to acquire the same license.

The cost of obtaining the above-mentioned licenses could be different depending on various factors, however, the validity of the licenses is 1-5 years.
